Pitch for A LEI STARTS by Edna Cabcabin Moran

A LEI STARTS is a 201 word, lyrical nonfiction picture book celebrating the Hawaiian lei in its unique forms. Three very different makers: a child, a young hula dancer and a feather lei creator make three very different leis—gathering, sorting and weaving their findings—in a “dance of fingers and flowers, leaf on leaf, feather and thread.” A wordless story of each lei-maker offers readers an up-close perspective, interweaving Hawaiian words, facts and trivia with meaning that highlights universal joy and connection—much like a lei, itself.
